Do I Have To Go To Church?

I am stuggling with Sunday mornings. I enjoy some of the other services and activities at our local fellowship, but sitting in a pew on a Sunday morning singing hymns just freaks me out. It feels too much like I am back in church, rather than exploring a new spiritual path and getting better aquainted with interesting people and ideas.

I want to engage with the community at the fellowship, but do I have to go Sunday morning service to really do that? Can I participate on a non-Sunday morning basis?

Have any other former-something UU's dealt with this issue? What has worked for you?

  1. Does your UU church have a meditation group, or a CUUPS chapter? That might help.

I know what you mean about being freaked out that you're actually in a church (I get round it by referring to it as chapel). I'm a Wiccan and a Unitarian (been Wiccan for 18 years, Unitarian for 2 years).

  2. We have a great CUUPS group, but they only meet on the main sabbats and it doesn't get me involved with the congregation at large. I'll be looking for other groups to get involved with, too.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to feel uncomfortable sitting in a pew.

  3. I can relate. I often find what I really need after service, visiting with people during coffee hour. @ one church, to meet my needs I started a new group called the UFO's.The Unitarian Fun Organization. We build community by doing service, physical activity like hiking, & having fun.
